About the course
This course was awarded dementia training initiative of the year at the UK National Dementia Care Awards, 2018. It has been adapted for online delivery and involves 'real-time' attendance via Microsoft Teams. The course is not recorded.
Aim
This course aims to prepare professionals and family carers to provide individualised and appropriate support for people with a learning disability during and after a diagnosis of dementia.

Who should attend?
The course will be relevant to health, allied health, third sector, social care and social work professionals, family carers and students. No prior knowledge or experience is required.
Method of delivery
1. The course is currently delivered live on Microsoft Teams for up to 20 staff from one organisation. The fee to the organisation is £650, although this may be higher if there are bespoke requests for content. Please contact me for further information if your organisation would like to make a booking. To take part, staff are advised to use a PC or laptop with stable internet connection. Use of a headset (to cut out background noise) is encouraged and a microphone (to enable full participation) is required.
2. Face to face delivery will be reviewed later in 2022.
The course is delivered at the Skilled level of the Promoting Excellence Framework, Scotland.
- One day of training delivered by Karen Watchman (currently online).
- Access to a downloadable version of the 25-minute training video 'Supporting Derek' (2 minute clip shown on this page) which you can use in your practice.
- Ongoing access to a private course web page which contains course toolkit with handouts and additional downloadable resources.
- Support to develop a plan to embed your learning in practice.
- Follow up online session for attendees to discuss transfer of learning to practice. This is typically 60-90 minutes and can be arranged by negotiation with the contracting organisation within a six months period after the training has been delivered.

- Understand current evidence in supporting people with a learning disability and dementia.
- Recognise the human rights of people with a learning disability and dementia to make decisions, exercise choice, and access information, including about their diagnosis.
- Engage with practical activities that reinforce the importance of individualised support, including the impact of the environment across care settings.
- Develop and apply an outcome-focused approach to providing care and support.
- Develop (with colleagues as appropriate) a draft organisational plan/strategy for supporting individuals ageing with a learning disability and dementia.
